How to get GitHub Copilot (FOR FREE!!!)
GitHub Copilot is a very powerful AI-powered tool built into your code editor. Normally, however, it costs money, and as high-school developers, we don't want to have to pay that money.
Fortunately, GitHub gives out free stuff, like free premium JetBrains IDEs and GitHub Copilot for student developers just like you and me! All you have to do is apply.
First, you will need to:
- Be in the school building
- Have a GitHub account with your school email address added to it as one of your emails, and have that email set as your primary email address in email settings
- Have Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) enabled on your GitHub account (install either Google Authenthicator app or GitHub app on your phone to do so)
- Have your real full name and address in the payment information section of your GitHub account
- Change your GitHub profile picture to something other than the default
- Change your GitHub profile to include a bio, pronouns, etc.
- Go here- make sure that you are logged into your github account (top right) and scroll all the way down to the application section.
- Fill out the email and school part of the application- your email should be your school email, you should choose City Schools of Decatur for the school.
- Upload a photo of your DHS student ID and submit the application.
You will now have to wait for up to 7 days for an email back from GitHub.
The email should look something like this one when recieved.
Next, click on the Global Campus link, and sign up for a global campus account if prompted.
Once you are done with that, simply go to here, and click Copilot Individual. Don't worry about the $10 cost, if you did the previous steps correctly it shall say you can get copilot for free. Do so and then yay you have copilot!!!!!
