Repository Readiness Assessment Agent

An automated agent for evaluating repository readiness for GitHub Copilot usage. This tool analyzes repositories across multiple dimensions to determine how effectively GitHub Copilot can assist developers.

Purpose

GitHub Copilot works best when repositories follow best practices for structure, documentation, and tooling. This agent provides a comprehensive assessment and actionable recommendations to optimize your repository for Copilot usage.

What It Evaluates

The agent assesses eight key areas, each weighted based on importance to Copilot effectiveness:

1. Build Capability (25 points)

  • Presence of build configuration files
  • Clear build instructions
  • Dependency management
  • CI/CD integration
  • Absence of environment-specific hardcoded values

2. Run Capability (20 points)

  • Clear application entry points
  • Runtime configuration documentation
  • Environment variable templates
  • Container/orchestration configurations
  • Launch configurations for IDEs

3. Test Capability (20 points)

  • Test framework configuration
  • Test file organization and naming
  • Test execution documentation
  • Separation of test types (unit/integration)
  • CI test automation

4. Code Understanding (20 points)

  • Logical project structure
  • Consistent naming conventions
  • Appropriate file sizes
  • Type annotations (where applicable)
  • Code style/linting configuration

5. Documentation Quality (15 points)

  • Comprehensive README
  • Architecture documentation
  • Contributing guidelines
  • API documentation
  • Inline code comments

6. Custom Instructions (15 points) ✨ NEW

  • Targeted instruction files in .github/instructions/
  • Content quality and comprehensiveness
  • Copilot's actual understanding of instructions

Copilot Readiness (30 points): Direct testing of Copilot CLI's ability to understand build, run, and test processes

Bonus Points (up to +15): GitHub Actions, Dependabot, security scanning, EditorConfig, TypeScript

Grading Scale

Maximum Score: 165 points (135 base + 30 Copilot Readiness)

  • A (90-100%): Excellent - Copilot will thrive (148-165 points)
  • B (80-89%): Good - Minor improvements recommended (132-147 points)
  • C (70-79%): Fair - Several enhancements needed (115-131 points)
  • D (60-69%): Poor - Significant work required (99-114 points)
  • F (0-59%): Failing - Major restructuring needed (0-98 points)

Usage

Running the Tool

Build and run the assessment tool:

Manual Assessment

For a manual, in-depth review:

  1. Open repo-readiness-agent.md
  2. Review each criterion systematically
  3. Check off applicable items
  4. Calculate scores for each category
  5. Document findings and recommendations

Output

The agent generates a detailed markdown report containing:

  • Overall grade and score
  • Category-by-category breakdown
  • Identified strengths and weaknesses
  • Prioritized recommendations
  • Executive summary and conclusion

Requirements

  • .NET SDK 6.0 or higher (for C# version)
  • PowerShell 5.1 or higher (for PowerShell version)

  • Read access to the target repository

Installing GitHub Copilot CLI

For the most accurate assessment, install GitHub Copilot CLI:

Without Copilot CLI, the tool will perform static analysis only and won't be able to test whether Copilot actually understands your custom instructions, agents, and skills.

Interpreting Results

High Scores (80-100)

Your repository is well-prepared for Copilot. Focus on maintaining standards and addressing minor gaps.

Medium Scores (60-79)

Good foundation, but several improvements needed. Follow priority actions to optimize Copilot effectiveness.

Low Scores (0-59)

Significant work required. Use this assessment as a roadmap for modernization and best practices adoption.

Based on assessments and the latest Copilot features (2025-2026), these practices maximize Copilot effectiveness:

  1. Clear structure: Organize code logically with meaningful names
