Mesa

Communal Augmented Reality for the commons

What is Mesa

Mesa is a communal/collective AR (Augmented Reality) project aimed at at-risk communities and indigenous groups. The core concept is to democratize AR technology using commonly available equipment, focusing on usability and open source development.

Vision (Northstar)

  • AR technology for the masses - not just for those with resources
  • Usability in open source is notoriously bad; mesa aims to prove our vision as a flagship product
  • Remote-only dream team ideating solutions for the commons
  • Security-by-proximity - safe from prying eyes through physical proximity
  • Multi-user gestures around a shared surface

Core Concept

  • Communal AR using commonly found technologies
  • Gestures-based interaction
  • Collective intelligence
  • Actionable information for at-risk communities

Target Communities

  • Indigenous groups in Brazil
  • At-risk communities (favelas, marginalized communities)
  • Favela childcare centers
  • Art collectives
  • Corporate waiting rooms
  • Shopping malls/commercial buildings/fairs (navigation, helper)
  • Communities with high traffic

Killer Applications

  1. Maps - critical for at-risk communities
  2. Card sorting - collective information organization
  3. Reading time - shared reading experiences

Possible Scopes

  1. Mesa (as table)
  2. Multipoint touchscreen
  3. Floor (whole body interaction)
  4. Tela (presentations)
  5. Gadget (if calibration is given)
