Scaling

Scaling is the core feature of Smart! — it lets you place multiple copies of any supported item in a grid pattern with a single click.

What is Scaling?

Instead of placing foundations one at a time, Smart! lets you:

  • Set a grid size (e.g., 8 × 4 × 2)
  • Preview all items as holograms
  • Place everything with one click

This works for foundations, walls, production buildings, storage, splitters, mergers, power poles, and more.

Basic Controls

Action NumPad Modifier Key
Increase X (width) NumPad 8 X + Scroll Up
Decrease X NumPad 5 X + Scroll Down
Increase Y (depth) NumPad 6 Z + Scroll Up
Decrease Y NumPad 4 Z + Scroll Down
Increase Z (height) NumPad 9 X+Z + Scroll Up
Decrease Z NumPad 3 X+Z + Scroll Down

Step-by-Step Example

Building an 8×4 Foundation Platform

  1. Select a foundation from the build menu
  2. Press NumPad 8 seven times (X = 8)
  3. Press NumPad 6 three times (Y = 4)
  4. Aim at your desired location
  5. Click to place all 32 foundations

Building a 2×1×3 Storage Tower

  1. Select a storage container
  2. Press NumPad 8 once (X = 2)
  3. Press NumPad 9 twice (Z = 3)
  4. Click to place 6 stacked containers

Understanding X, Y, Z Axes

  • X (Red) — Width, left-right from your view
  • Y (Green) — Depth, forward-backward from your view
  • Z (Blue) — Height, up-down

Tip: Press NumPad 0 to toggle axis arrows on your hologram for visual reference.

Direction Control

By default, grids expand in the positive direction. To change direction:

Using Smart! Panel

  1. Press K to open Smart! Panel
  2. Click the +/- toggle next to any axis
  3. Click Apply

Using Keybinds

  • Hold the axis modifier and use NumPad 7 to toggle direction

Supported Items

Fully Supported

  • ✅ Foundations (all types and sizes)
  • ✅ Walls (standard, windows, gates)
  • ✅ Production buildings (Constructors, Assemblers, Manufacturers, etc.)
  • ✅ Storage containers (all tiers)
  • ✅ Fluid buffers
  • ✅ Splitters and Mergers (all tiers)
  • ✅ Power poles (all types)
  • ✅ Pipeline junctions

Not Yet Supported

  • ❌ Resource extractors (Miners, Oil Pumps, Water Extractors)
  • ❌ Wall/floor holes
  • ❌ Some roof pieces
  • ❌ Signs and displays
  • ❌ Beams and pillars

Tips for Scaling

  1. Start small — Test with 2×2 before going 20×20
  2. Check resources — Large grids consume lots of materials
  3. Use the HUD — Always verify your grid size before placing
  4. Combine with Spacing — Add gaps for belts between buildings

Related Features

  • Spacing — Add gaps between scaled items
  • Steps — Create vertical stepping patterns
  • Stagger — Add diagonal offsets
  • Rotation — Create curved arrangements

Common Issues

Grid too large?

  • Smart! warns you when grids exceed 100 items
  • Consider breaking into smaller sections

Items overlapping?

  • Check your spacing settings
  • Some items need spacing to fit properly
