TamperTrail provides a way to keep your logs safe from tampering. It uses a system that links logs together through cryptographic hashes. This makes sure you can trust the log records. The software is designed to run on your own computer or server.
TamperTrail is a tool that collects and stores audit logs. These logs record actions or changes in a system. Unlike normal logs, TamperTrail makes sure no one can change logs without leaving a trace. This helps meet security standards like GDPR and HIPAA.
TamperTrail works with PostgreSQL, a popular database. It has a clean interface built with React and Python. You do not need special programming skills to use it. It runs on Windows and can be self-hosted on your own computer.
- People who want reliable logging for compliance and audits
- Teams tracking changes for security reasons
- Users needing to meet data privacy rules like HIPAA or GDPR
- Anyone who prefers to keep logs on their own systems instead of the cloud
Before installing, make sure your Windows PC meets these requirements:
- Windows 10 or later (64-bit recommended)
- At least 4 GB of RAM
- Minimum 2 GHz dual-core processor
- 2 GB free disk space
- Internet connection for initial download
Click the big green button below to visit the full release page. There you will find the latest software version ready to download.
- Visit the TamperTrail releases page.
- Find the latest release.
- Look for a Windows installer file. It usually ends with
.exe. - Click the file to download it. Save it somewhere easy to find, like your Desktop or Downloads folder.
- Once downloaded, double-click the
.exefile to start installation. - Follow the instructions in the setup wizard. Choose options like install location or shortcuts if prompted.
- When installation finishes, you can launch TamperTrail from the Start Menu or Desktop shortcut.
After you install TamperTrail, you need to set it up to start logging:
- Launch the TamperTrail app.
- The setup screen guides you through creating a database connection. Use the default PostgreSQL settings unless you have a separate database ready.
- Enter your desired username and password. These give you access to the app.
- Configure any system-specific options like log storage folders or network permissions.
- Click “Finish” to complete setup.
You do not need to connect to any external service. All your logs stay on your computer unless you choose otherwise.
- Go to the main dashboard to see recent logs.
- Use filters to search logs by date, type, or user action.
- Every log entry links cryptographically to previous logs. This helps detect if any logs were changed.
- Export logs in common formats like CSV or JSON for sharing or archiving.
- Set alerts for specific events like failed logins or data changes.
The interface uses clear menus and buttons. Tooltips explain features as you use them.
TamperTrail uses cryptographic hash chaining. When a log is added, it generates a unique code using the contents of the log and the code from the previous log. This chain makes it impossible to change past logs without breaking the chain. If the chain breaks, you know something has been tampered with.
It also encrypts sensitive data during storage and transit. These steps help meet standards like ISO27001 and SOC2.
For users with more technical knowledge, TamperTrail supports:
- Connecting to external PostgreSQL servers
- Setting up automated backups using scripts
- Customizing audit rules and log retention periods
- Integrating with existing REST APIs for automatic log imports
- Running TamperTrail in Docker containers for easy deployment
These options appear in the settings menu once basic setup is done.

To update:
- Download the latest Windows installer from the release page.
- Close any running TamperTrail windows.
- Run the installer. It will overwrite old files without removing your data.
- Open TamperTrail after update to confirm it works.
- If the installer does not run, right-click the file and select “Run as administrator.”
- Make sure your Windows Defender or other antivirus is not blocking the installation.
- Verify PostgreSQL is installed and running if you use an external database.
- Restart your computer if TamperTrail does not start after installation.
- Visit the issues page on GitHub for common problems and fixes.
- Detailed logging and audit documentation are inside the app under Help.
