Next.js TypeScript License

Zero-Resume, Proof-of-Work Coding Challenges

ShadowWork transforms real engineering problems into temporary, browser-based coding challenges. The platform ensures privacy, performance, and fairness in technical assessments.

中文文档 | Live Demo | Documentation

🎯 Overview

ShadowWork is a next-generation technical assessment platform that:

  • Privacy-First: No resume bias, anonymous evaluation
  • Real-World Problems: Converted from actual GitHub PRs
  • Browser-Based: Full Node.js environment in your browser (WebContainer)
  • Session Recording: Captures coding process with optimized rrweb
  • AI-Powered: Task generation and evaluation using GPT-4
  • Gamified: Points system with automatic offer qualification

🏗️ Architecture

Core Tech Stack

  • Frontend: Next.js 14 (App Router), React 18, TypeScript
  • Editor: Monaco Editor (VS Code engine)
  • Runtime: WebContainer API (Browser-based Node.js)
  • Recording: rrweb (Session replay with optimization)
  • Backend: Supabase (Auth, Database, Storage)
  • AI: OpenAI GPT-4o (Task generation & evaluation)
  • Styling: Tailwind CSS
  • Notifications: Slack Webhooks

Key Features

🔒 Module A: Security Infrastructure

Global Middleware ensures WebContainer compatibility:

// middleware.ts
Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy: require-corp
Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy: same-origin

Enables SharedArrayBuffer for WebContainer's multi-threading capabilities.

🔄 Module B: Task Generation Pipeline

Real-World Task Synthesis:

GitHub PR → Apify Scraper → OpenAI GPT-4 → Anonymized Challenge

Privacy Protection:

  • ✅ Scenario transformation (Fintech → Gaming)
  • ✅ Exact version dependencies (no ^ or ~)
  • ❌ Never exposes: PR IDs, repo names, company names

Modes:

  • ?mock=true - Offline testing with local JSON
  • ?source=github&repo=owner/name - Generate from real PRs
  • ?source=custom - User-provided tasks

💻 Module C: Deterministic Sandbox

WebContainer Integration:

  • Full Node.js environment in browser
  • Virtual file system
  • npm package installation
  • Code execution and testing

rrweb Optimization (94% data reduction):

{
  sampling: {
    mousemove: true,
    mouseInteraction: { MouseMove: 200 }, // Throttle to 200ms
    scroll: 150,
    input: 'last'
  },
  checkoutEveryNth: 200, // Snapshot every 200 events
maxEvents: 5000, // Hard limit with FIFO queue
  // Canvas/fonts recording disabled
}

Results: 80MB → 5MB for 30-minute sessions

🎮 Module D: Gamification & Recruitment

Points System:

  • Base: 100 points per challenge
  • Speed Bonus: +50 if completed < 30 minutes
  • Offer Threshold: 300 points (auto-qualification)

Enhanced Features:

  • ⏰ Real-time countdown timer
  • 🚀 Terminal boot sequence animation
  • 🎊 Confetti celebration on submission
  • 🏆 Achievement tracking

Chrome 92+ ✅ Full Support Recommended
Edge 92+ ✅ Full Support Recommended
Firefox ❌ Not Supported WebContainer limitation
Safari ❌ Not Supported WebContainer limitation

📦 Deployment

Vercel (Recommended)

  1. Push code to GitHub/GitLab
  2. Visit Vercel Dashboard
  3. Click "New Project" → Import repository
  4. Add environment variables
  5. Deploy!

Build Command: npm run build
Output Directory: .next
Install Command: npm install

Environment Variables in Vercel

Add all variables from .env.local to Vercel project settings.

Critical: Ensure COOP/COEP headers are set (middleware.ts handles this automatically)

Verify Deployment

# Check headers
curl -I https://your-domain.vercel.app

# Should see:
# cross-origin-embedder-policy: require-corp
# cross-origin-opener-policy: same-origin

Adding a New Feature

  1. Create branch: git checkout -b feature/your-feature
  2. Implement: Add files in appropriate directories
  3. Test: Run locally and check for errors
  4. Lint: npm run lint (auto-fix available)
  5. Commit: Use conventional commits (feat: add X)
  6. Push & PR: Create pull request

Code Style

  • TypeScript: Use interfaces, avoid any
  • React: Functional components + hooks
  • Naming: PascalCase (components), camelCase (functions)
  • Comments: JSDoc for exported functions

🐛 Troubleshooting

WebContainer Won't Start

Symptoms: Stuck on "Booting WebContainer..."

Solutions:

  1. Check COOP/COEP headers (F12 → Network → Headers)
  2. Use Chrome/Edge (not Firefox/Safari)
  3. Clear browser cache (Ctrl+Shift+Delete)
  4. Check console for detailed errors

rrweb Not Recording

Symptoms: No "Recording" indicator

Solutions:

  1. Check console for rrweb errors
  2. Ensure node_modules/rrweb exists
  3. Refresh page to restart recording

API Errors

Symptoms: 500 errors on /api/generate-task

Solutions:

  1. Use Mock Mode: ?mock=true
  2. Check environment variables in .env.local
  3. Verify OpenAI API key has credits
  4. Check server logs for details

Deployment Issues

Symptoms: Works locally, fails on Vercel

Solutions:

  1. Verify all env vars added to Vercel
  2. Check build logs for errors
  3. Ensure middleware.ts is in project root
  4. Test with npm run build locally first
