portable-agent-usb lets you run AI coding agents directly from a USB drive. You can use Claude Code and OpenAI Codex on any Windows PC. There is no need to install anything. Just plug in your USB stick and start writing code with AI support immediately.
This tool helps you when you move between computers or can’t install software. All tools and files run off the USB drive. Your settings stay private on your drive as well.
- Windows 10 or later (64-bit recommended)
- USB drive with at least 4 GB free space
- Internet connection for AI features (Claude and OpenAI Codex require access to their servers)

Copy files to your USB Drive
- After downloading, unzip the file if it comes as a ZIP archive.
- Copy the entire
portable-agent-usbfolder to your USB drive. - Make sure all files are inside the folder and not broken into smaller parts.

Run the application
- Open the
portable-agent-usbfolder on your USB drive. - Double-click the
start-agent.batfile to launch the program. - A command window will open and guide you through starting Claude Code or OpenAI Codex.

Follow on-screen prompts
- The program will ask for your API keys or logins if needed.
- Enter them as prompted. This data only stays on your USB drive.
- Wait a moment for the agents to start working.

- Use the text interface or the command line to talk to the AI agents.
- You can write code, ask questions, and get suggestions in real time.
- Save your work directly on the USB stick.

Application won’t start:
Make sure you run thestart-agent.batfile from the USB drive. Running files directly from ZIP or another folder can cause errors. -
AI services not responding:
Check your internet connection. Claude Code and OpenAI Codex need online access to work. -
Missing Node.js or errors about Node:
This package includes Node.js bundled inside. Make sure you run the batch file from the USB folder, not from elsewhere. -
Permission denied errors:
Some public or locked computers limit USB execution. Try using a different PC or make sure your user account has basic run permissions.
portable-agent-usb keeps your coding data only on the USB drive. It does not save logs or files on the host computer. API keys and user data remain on your USB stick until you delete them.
