## 2026-06-25 - Anchor Button Accessibility and Keyboard Interaction
**Learning:** When using anchor `<a>` tags with `href="#"` as buttons (like `#sitrep-btn`), screen readers announce them as links by default. Furthermore, native anchors only trigger on the `Enter` key, whereas standard buttons respond to both `Enter` and `Space`. This disparity causes accessibility issues for keyboard and screen reader users who expect button-like behavior.
**Action:** Always add `role="button"` to anchor tags functioning as buttons. If they open a modal, also add `aria-haspopup="dialog"`. Additionally, explicitly bind a `keydown` event listener for the `Space` key (calling `e.preventDefault()` to stop page scroll) alongside the standard `click` event listener.
