This applies to EnterNormally and EnterInRMode and EnterInGMode Indirect but NOT EnterInGMode Direct.

It is possible to avoid a forced Small Sidehopper hit by buffering an aim down as you release X-Ray. Evading further hits to kill may call for further logic, if not already covered by the existing kill strats.

My testing showed plasma is enough to avoid all damage, or Morph and dealing with the small hoppers quickly with timed unmorphs.
