Option to generate and distribute .PYO files

Ideally we should be able to distribute optimized code, a.k.a. PYO files instead of PYC files.

After running bbfreeze with "python -OO ...", and comparing the resulting files, it seemed to me the code is generated with optimizations, as I wanted, but the resulting files keep PYC extension.
Is that the case?

yes that might be true. You may also try to set the environment variable PYTHONOPTIMIZE.
