is pretext keeping a cache based on map name?

I am a bit puzzled about a behaviour I noticed a few times.

Let's say I have two maps called mymap.pretext in two different folders.
If I go to folder1/mymap.pretext and make any edits, these edits now also appear in folder2/mymap.pretext.
If I subsequently go to folder2 and rename mymap.pretext the edits are now gone.

Is it expected for Pretext to be linking files that are placed in different folders/subfolders based on identical naming?

PretextView saves a cache file locally which stores a record of changes made to opened map files.
On mac /Users/[uid]/.config/PretextView/
Linux ~/.config/PretextView/

It shouldn't matter if you have every map called map.pretext as they should all get a separate cache file created that will only be written to when editing that map... unless it is the same map file. Location does not matter.
Renaming a file and opening 'for the first time' will create a new cache file to be written which will be empty of any edits made.

Ok got it. So if I want to duplicate a map file and work independently on both copies it is not sufficient to isolate them in different folders, I need to rename one of them.
