Main nav problems #173

Description

There are numerous usability problems with the main nav. Some have been reported on #60 (z-index issue), #77 (no nav to second level from hamburger menu), #110 (dropdown items align left, fixed in some places but not all). Other problems include:

  • On desktop, browser width must be very wide (full screen width on a MB Air) to show header nav items instead of hamburger
  • On desktop, a non-functional hamburger is shown along with nav items at an in-between breakpoint
    plone org-double-nav
  • On desktop, dropdown from header nav items covers page, scrolling doesn't budge it, no obvious way to get rid of it
    plone org-dropdown-nav-hides-page

These examples are when using Firefox. Spend a little time trying to navigate around the site using the main nav and you will see these issues and probably more. This is a high priority problem.

We discussed at the Axolote Sprint. A Volto upgrade and moving to a different theme may be the ultimate solution, but people thought some quick fixes could be made to significantly improve things. Several people expressed interest in working on plone.org issues during the Beethoven Sprint, hopefully including this - either through an upgrade or quick fixes.
