same comment as for cpp/hpp extensions: I understand the need to refactor but we need to weight the pros and cons. The actual code does not produce memory leaks and works fine. If we change to smart pointers the actual code (I'm not talking about new features we may add), we take a risk of breaking something working for no good reason.

Also, I would like to avoid as much as possible c++ above c++11. I want to keep open the possibility to compile on multiple platforms and the more we raise the standard, the more chance we have to become incompatible with some platforms
