We need various types of tests

(Create sub-issues, when starting to work on the following list)

• Explore test setup: which technology do we want to use?
• Unit tests: identify which parts of the code should be tested
• Component tests: identify which parts of the UI should be tested
• E2E/System tests: test complex interactions with the entire operaton application running

For System-/E2E tests I would recommend Robot Framework. It abstracts test specifications well enough to make the purpose and the user journey of a test case readable. it can access and API, regardless if web-ui, database, rest-api etc.

For webui automation, I would use Robot Framework's Playwright extension (aka "Browser Library"), which is fast, reliable and has some perks like an assertion engine. If you would use playwright for component tests, too, it may be possible to reuse page objects from component tests in e2e tests.

What must be considered is that Robot Framework is implemented in Python, which means it requires Python to be executed. Python knowledge is not required, though. But it is an additional runtime to be added when running tests locally. For using Browser library, nodejs has to be installed, too.

Recommended IDE is VSCode, PyCharm/IntelliJ is possible, too. However, VSCode may have better AI support for Robot Framework, if that's something you like to utilize.
