Feature request - OpenHPC 2.9.X - update Intel OneAPI/OpenMPI compiler suite

May we request an update of Intel OneAPI and the pertinent OpenMPI compiler version for the OpenHPC v2.9x? The github PR process is new to us but we are glad to contribute with the testing.

Thanks for reaching out. You are now the second person asking for it. There was a request during SC25 in St. Louis and now here.

Without reaching out to us we would not be aware what people are expecting, so thanks again.

Which Intel version would you like to see adopted by a new 2.x release? For Open MPI I would just use the latest version (currently 5.0.10).

For how you could help... Depending on the amount of time you can offer, you could try to update the Intel compiler locally and rebuild everything with it to see if it still works. The 2.x branch has not seen many updates for some time now, so maybe some components need to be updated to work with the latest compiler. You can always take a look at the 4.x branch as a reference. There have been some changes to how OpenHPC works especially around CI, but to get an overview what works with the latest Intel compiler and not (and how to fix it), you could just try it out locally yourself.

Depending on how much you are interested to get involved you could report your findings here or we can guide you how to create PRs with testing.

New Open MPI for 2.x was definitely something we were thinking about and a new Intel compiler is also possible.

Since the classic intel compiler icc/ifort have been discontinued in 2024 and now that the latest intel release oneAPI 2026 is being offered as Intel oneAPI Toolkit, which consolidates the Intel OneAPI base and Intel OneAPI HPC toolkits into into a single product. Perhaps testing the latest oneAPI 2026 for new 2.x release would be a good starting point?

We are in the process of building a new OpenHPC environment with UEFI PXE boot over Ethernet in support of new hardware (servers) where Legacy bios boot is no longer available. To maintain compatibility with the multi-generational servers, we will stick with OpenHPC 2.x release for at least another year.

We will try updating the intel compiler locally with the latest OpenHPC 2.x and report back the findings here.
