Epic: Enhanced Audio-Visual Content Experience

Target Outcome: Improved viewer performance and functionality for audio-visual content delivery

Context WVU anticipates significant growth in audio-visual holdings, with approximately 1,800 new AV assets expected over the next year from two grant-funded digitization projects. Current viewer configuration is suboptimal for AV content

Approach: The team will evaluate and implement improvements to the IIIF viewer experience, with particular focus on:

• Audio and video playback optimization
• Streaming performance for large media files
• Universal Viewer configuration for multimedia content
• User interface enhancements specific to AV navigation
• Testing with representative sample files from the upcoming digitization projects

Priority Level: This work would be prioritized collaboratively with WVU stakeholders during Sprint Planning, balanced against other critical bug fixes and accessibility requirements

Dependencies: Access to sample AV files from WVU's collections for testing purposes

cc @jmm0177 Would you be able to provide a more specific acceptance criteria for this epic of work? What does "Improved viewer performance and functionality for audio-visual content delivery" mean exactly, vs What is the current implementation lacking? This as written feels too vague for a dev to start work.

I think that @SixtyGrit suggested this as a possible enhancement. Has there been feedback from PALs or other hyku users about video display and performance? I can also try to get some feedback on our end too.

Per NicD, PALS users are interested in expanding embed options (ie: internet archive - or anything w an embed code can be pulled in)

Most of their users use audio > video.

Not aware of any outstanding A/V requests, besides bugs (mp3 won't play for logged out users).

Q from Nick S - Do we get streaming automatically if we use CloverIIIF instead?

Danielle provided these comments to me:

"Overall, I like the player. Researchers appreciate the ability to scroll and find exact times in AV materials. The scroller works pretty well but I'm wondering if we would want the ability to add time stamps on the scroller to make it easier to find certain content and to line up with transcriptions.

I don't like that the file name shows up in the viewer. Can we remove that?

The "thumbnail" at the bottom of the page is confusing with video. I thought it was an image taken from the video, but it's the video file. Instead of thumbnail perhaps it should just say "file." "
