Program doesn't stop on "Python Debugger Console" kill

Behaviour

On linux (Ubuntu 24.04 exactly), active python process doesn't stop on closing "Python Debugger Console" and debugger UI dissappears. On Windows 10 acts as expected.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Run next script

while True:
    with open("counter.txt", "w") as f:
        f.write(str(i))
    time.sleep(1)
    i += 1

2. Close "Python Debugger Console" through "Kill (Delete)" button
3. Debugger UI dissappears, but created file "counter.txt" is still being updated

thank you for issue report! This is a known issue actually where the debugger button does not kill the process just the debug connection. We have a fix in but are waiting a debugpy release to push out the fix added upstream to support this. So hopefully getting this supported soon!

I'm not sure this issue related to mine, subscribed and waiting for the fix though.
Just to clarify, I have UI with "stop" button, not "detach". And trying to stop execution by closing terminal.

thank you for clarifying- so it still keeps going after you close the terminal? That would be unexpected so I will re-open

It is. On linux (via ssh, if it matters. Didn't has local linux machine to test with) it still running without any UI. The only way to terminate is to kill process manually.

@karthiknadig I am on the pre-release of the extension which means it should be on the new debugpy version that should kill the process on disconnect but it doesn't seem to be working. Any ideas?

Is the debugger process killed when the terminal is closed? would it be possible to check that?

@rchiodo This might need some investigation from debugpy. When the terminal process is killed, the launcher process should exit and close the user process. Not really sure whey it keeps user process going, since this is not a detach scenario.

This is a termination of the launcher process, but there's no shutdown request from the debugger? Not sure how debugpy would guarantee the child process dies. That would be a function of the OS I would think?
