Usage in combination with Dev Containers extension

I would like to view the Docker containers, images, etc within a project's container, as allowed by the Dev Containers extension, but the Docker executable cannot be reached, per the below screen. Is this an intended scenario for the Container Tools extension or am I misusing it?

Converting this to a discussion since that seems like the right place for it.

There are two different approaches you can take here, depending on what you want to happen.

1. The first is to set up Docker-in-Docker, that is, install Docker into the container and you can use it normally. Containers you start will run in the host container. The Container Tools extension should work without issues.
2. The next is to set up Docker-beside-Docker. This is more complicated, but may be more in line with what you want. Essentially, you volume map in the Docker socket and the Docker CLI, so that containers you start run beside the host container, on the host itself. Once you've done all that setup, again the Container Tools extension should work without issues.
