Using programming to solve problems in daily life

One of the best things about learning to code is how applicable it is to my daily life. Now that I can write applications, I have a whole avenue of solutions that are now available to me. For instance, I help manage a Makerspace, and, as the Treasurer, I’m responsible for collecting membership dues and rental fees. The rental fees in particular were very difficult to keep track of because of their short time periods. Thus, I wrote an application that will send them and me reminders on Slack that their membership and/or rental plot is expiring and that they need to renew. Now I can easily monitor the tens of rentals that I have at any one time. This is a somewhat obvious result of learning to code though; of course I can solve some problems by making my own application.

However, I didn’t realize the value it would bring in fixing other applications, even those written in an unknown language. I do a little bit of drumming in my free time and wanted to make a digital drum set for my house using an Arduino. Not wanting to write the code myself, I searched on Github and came across a program written in Java that did exactly what I wanted to do – take a serial input from the Arduino and convert it to midi audio samples. First off, I wouldn’t have been comfortable searching on Github for suitable code if I hadn’t gotten the experience at Flatiron. Once I downloaded the code, I realized that it was only partially complete (obvious having seen the last commit was a decade ago). Although I don’t know Java, I felt comfortable enough breaking apart the code so that it worked with an Arduino Mega instead of Arduino Uno. The few code changes were enough to allow a whole assortment of instruments to be played at once and to default certain inputs on the Arduino to specific midi tones rather than having to set it all up on initialization.

I’ve been a Maker for awhile so I’ve always had a sense that I can build anything. Now, I have a whole set of digital options to solve these real world problems.
