Gothic 2 crashes when saving with Access Violation with Steam-Fix installed

When DX11 is installed and enabled, saving by any means (quick save, normal save) causes the game to crash instantly.

I installed the VC_redist, but that didn't help. GPU is RTX 5070ti

Are you by any chance playing Eternal mod?

This mod currently crashes when saving with newer dx11 versions.

It uses a lot of older Union stuff and likely also does other things that collide with what the renderer does.

Nope, Vanilla G2NR. And a couple of plugins and patches that I usually play with. Crashes still happen when I have them uninstalled, too. I downloaded GD3D11-17.8-dev20 by SaiyansKing and it doesn't crash anymore.

Newer versions cause crashes. But only in G2. I just finished playing G1 with v17.8-rev'SK9 and I didn't have a single crash there

Please list all patches and plugins you play with, and if you have 4gb patch enable and/or Union Primary Patch or whatever it's called nowadays.

If I can pin point down which interaction/"hack" etc. breaks saving, I might be able to fix it from renderer side.

I regularly perform save/load with different mods and could not produce a crash that way yet, only with Gothic 2 Eternal mod.

Even Chronicles of Myrtana works fine until it runs out of memory (32 bit DXVK helps on my system to reduce Out of memory deaths considerably)

What I do know is that "ASCII saves" (optional Union feature) make many mods crash when saving/loading.

I found out by testing with Eternal Mod, that some Plugin overrides the Savegame Thumbnail code, which crashes the game when saving with renderer enabled.

Please try the latest nightly if the crashes still happen.

The savegame thumbnail images might show invalid textures (like the gothic fonts), but at least that is better than completely crashing.

Still crashing with this version, but the text in the error window is different. This error also appears when I delete all my plugins and patches:

Something corrupts the renderer/gothic. In regular gothic this does not happen to me, nor my other testers. Even Gothic 2 Eternal mod now "works" without corrupting while saving.

Can you please provide the log.txt from the Gothic2\system directory? Maybe some kind of driver issue or idk. A clean gothic 2 install, even with some plugins like advanced inventory, union 1.0m and some Ninja-Patches works fine.

Tried clean install, no crashes.

Then I installed Steam fix (https://github.com/dosinabox/g2_steam_fix) and the game crashed when I tried to save.

This fix includes:

• Steam Launcher Optimizer: Instant launch of mods from the Workshop;
• Union (v1.0m): Further development of the SystemPack project with additional fixes, also enabling the use of advanced user plugins;
• Support for all XInput-compatible gamepads (Union zGamePad plugin from June 29, 2022);
• Unofficial update: Fixes numerous bugs and errors in quests, dialogue, worlds, models, and animations (version 31 from June 27, 2025, launched separately);
• Widescreen, high-resolution loading screens.

And I think i've found the culprit. It's the unofficial patch, it seems. If I launch the game without the scriptpatch, it won't crash when I save the game.

UPD: Nope, it's the steam fix. Installed the unofficial patch separately, no crashes. I'll report it to to the steam guide page where the steam fix is posted

similar issue with G2 Legend of Ahssun. WIth D3D11 installed (lattest Version) it crashes after like 10 saves

See the readme about using DXVK (x32 version, dxgi.dll and d3d11.dll) combined with the renderer.

Big mods/texture mods cause out of memory errors after some time. Especially on older versions of the renderer. (You didn't specify what version you have installed)

Installing DXVK on top alleviates most of the out of memory issues.
