Plan Clerk paid-tier upgrade timing (membership cap + features) #255

Context

We are on Clerk's free plan today. Limits we'll hit as Team product grows:

  • 20-member cap per org (free).
  • "Unlimited membership" listed as a paid add-on in production Organization settings.
  • "Verified domains" listed as an add-on.
  • Custom Admin role beyond org:admin / org:member may also be a paid feature.
  • Custom email template editing is gated behind paid plan (confirmed 2026-05-28 via "Upgrade plan" modal on Customization → Emails). Today we cannot fix the Invitation template (logo not rendering) or the Verification code template (logo too large) on production without upgrading. See also Export Ladder wordmark PNG for Clerk email templates (light-bg variant) #256.

What to figure out

  • Clerk's current pricing tiers and what we unlock at each.
  • Which tier unlocks unlimited org membership.
  • Which tier unlocks custom email template editing.
  • Trigger criteria: at what point (first paying Team client signed, first client requesting >20 designers, or first prospect demo where the off-brand emails matter) do we upgrade?
  • Who pays for it (Drawbackwards), how is it billed, who owns the relationship.

Priority

Not blocking today. Should be decided before the first real client provisioning, and definitely before any client expects 20+ team members or before we send invite emails to a paying prospect.
