Bomb Sight - Mapping the World War 2 London Blitz Bomb Census

Static archive of the Bomb Sight project (2011-2013).

Screenshot

About the project

The Bomb Sight project was mapping the London WW2 bomb census between 7/10/1940 and 06/06/1941.

Previously available only by viewing in the Reading Room at The National Archives, Bomb Sight is making the maps available to citizen researchers, academics and students.

They will be able to explore where the bombs fell and to discover memories and photographs from the period.

    • Area pages
      • Add bomb layers to zoom 15 (for smaller wards)
      • Fix live/TMS usage when switching between tabs
  • Background mapping provider
    • Base map provider should be replaced with new provider (currently OpenStreetMap, previously Carto)
    • Nominatim geocoder should be replaced with new provider (currently OpenStreetMap, previously Mapquest)
    • Aerial imagery layer to be re-added if available (previously Bing)
  • Third party services
    • AddThis needs removing

Dev notes

Archival using wget

wget can be used to retrieve all the pages from the original site and rewrite the URLs for local use, though it will still require a little manual fixing.

wget -rH -Dbombsight.org,static.prod.bombsight.org,static.prod.bombsight.org -l 5 -p --convert-links -i seed-urls.txt

Geoserver

To pull:

docker pull docker.osgeo.org/geoserver:2.28.0

To run:

docker run -it -p 8080:8080 \
  --mount type=bind,src=<path>/geoserver/data,target=/opt/geoserver_data \
  --env SKIP_DEMO_DATA=true \
  --env ENABLE_JSONP=true \
  docker.osgeo.org/geoserver:2.28.0

To login: http://127.0.0.1:8080/geoserver/web (admin/geoserver)

Docker compose

Once Geoserver is configured as desired using the mounted data directory (see above), you can run the following to build and run using a snapshot of that data directory.

Copy the .env.example file to .env and configure appropriately.

docker compose up --build

TODO

  • deployment and security/stability review

GeoWebCache to TMS static tile caching

To seed the tiles using GeoWebCache (GWC), go to the Tilesets page, click seed, choose zoom levels 5-14 (or 5-17 for raster maps), and start.

To copy tiles cached by GeoWebCache into a static TMS directory structure:

python scripts/gwc_to_tms.py geoserver/data/gwc/sit_prod_agg_bomb static/tms/prod_agg_bomb
