Better wording for controls

Apparently I have chosen words not a single climate scientist understands and I need to be more consistent with them. Things which were very noticeable at the EGU:

• hide min -> hide low (I have used LOW in the color map-table above, so be consistent), maybe we also have to change the position of the checkbox to be closer to the histograms.

• Posterize -> Discrete colormap

• Graticules -> Show Lat/Lon Grid

• Land/Sea Mask --- Add Off somewhere. Some people didn't get it that it was off at this setting

I don't think Hover on its own is better than Data picker. Maybe something like Value inspector?

• I thought "Data picker" was pretty clear. 'Hover' would be confusing. 'Value inspector' also works.
• Re the land mask, on/off. That would be helpful.
• Re 'show/hide min'. Would be nice to also nice to have 'show/hide max'. Some datasets have 9999 as NaN (sigh)
• 'use texture' has always confused me

Hover doesn't give any indication that it shows the data (lat/lon/value).

any better suggestions? Google Maps calls it Satellite which would be also quite confusing as we don't have that many different options there

What else than data can 'hover' show? Do you have an example?
Imo, 'data picker' is not clear. 1. Values occur without actual picking. 2. Everything could show up, including a Data Download Form or a time series.

It should be data picker.
It's pretty obvious that this is the thing which people can use to pick (i.e. take up) data (individual data points) from the map. It's a detail of this process, that the picked up data is shown in a tool tip located above the data location. Note that the tool does not only hover, but also display the data on the colorbar and histogram.

Hover means that there's something above in the air. This very general statement is indeed true for the tool tip, but it's unrelated to the purpose of the tool (namely to pick data from the map).

it could be data picker in the future, right now, just to be clear, it is definetly hover: https://docs.bokeh.org/en/latest/docs/user_guide/interaction/tools.html#ug-interaction-tools-hover-tool. Shall we use bokeh as reference as it is a central, interactive viz lib used by many downstream libs? If there is another standard, let me know

Some points regarding confusion:

• pickers are used for input fields where users can choose from. See here
• data picker should mean that you can "click" or really "pick" sth, but you just hover right now. It is passive. So the additional histogram info is actually OK to be shown for "hover".
• "data" can be anything. Same critic you have for hover: general statement, not specific enough.

I would like to see a "Flag" mechanism where one can create a persistent tooltip. Sth that shares the mechanism for "Annotations". Sth that can be used for Orcestra data.
