Messages in threads show as phantom replies

Describe the bug
Messages sent by thread non-authors show as being replies to a message that doesn't exist, causing them to have a little loading remark above them

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Create a thread
2. Have someone else reply (maybe twice? First reply in my observation did not have this issue)
3. See error

Expected behavior
Message should not be treated as a direct reply to another message
