I don't really use them but they're definitely important.
For Clipboard, private was the target use case (?!), and apparently 80 percent of their clips were private (?!!).
I don't think private-by-default is the mindset users should be introduced to the site with (group activities are how humans learn to do things), but mostly-private users should definitely be considered in every decision.
Also should be considered is the case I feel Clipboard maybe kind of overlooked: users who do mostly public/private clips, but have a few subjects they mean to keep private/want to share. Clipboard kind of worked under the assumption that you don't need to distinguish between the two because you probably only do all one or the other.
