Alarm receiver code does not run

This never worked for me.
the code inside the alarm receiver never ran till I modified MainActivity code as below

alarmManager = (AlarmManager) this.getSystemService(Context.ALARM_SERVICE);
Intent intent = new Intent(this, AlarmReceiver.class);
pendingIntent = PendingIntent.getBroadcast(this, 0, intent, PendingIntent.FLAG_UPDATE_CURRENT);
