Development - how to install modified gem?

I was thinking about making PR for #33 (seems easier than migrating project) but I have two blockers:

• how can I install gem modified locally (so I can test it)
• is this project maintained at least to degree of reviewing incoming PRs? Or should I consider it as a dead
