Introduce David Ross

This is David's first steering committee meeting.

HARMONY

We had 8 - 12 people collaborating on SBOL topics. Most in person, some remote.

Objectives:

1. 10 Years of SBOL Visual

• Looked at ACS Synthetic Biology papers (1,649) to see if their figures were compliant with SBOL Visual, whether they used the best practices, etc.
• We encountered glyphs outside the standard. Should we add them? How do we handle this?
• Planning to list all papers that had at least one (or every) figure that was compliant with SBOL Visual (around 400)
• Status: we need to compile the collected info and publish it
• Goksel asks if we plan to send a letter to a journal, or publish an article, summarizing results

2. SBOL Converter

• A small group was working on the SBOL2 <-> SBOL3 converter. We want more people working on this important effort.
• This effort will be ongoing

Retiring Editors

• Gonzalo's 3 year term has expired
• Tom's 3 year term expires in August
• We plan to run a single election to fill both appointments
  • This will provide a transition period before Tom's term expires

IWBDA and Bio-Innovation Week

• Web sites are up:

• We expect "10 Years of SBOL Visual" to be a topic
• IWBDA is now part of BioInnovation Week

  • All will be in Boston, MA, USA
• Fund-raising efforts have been combined under BDAC
• Workshop feedback from Georgie - we should focus more on users than on developers
  • Chris says IWBDA is typically for developers, not biologists
  • Chris agrees that workshops should be more hands on, and put online so those who cannot attend can get to them
• Goksel suggests creating a special interest group for interested people

Real World SBOL

• Can we choose a small number of papers and manually convert the data into SBOL

• We could then show real world use cases

• This gives access to, or leverages, a set of tools: SynBioHub, ExcelToSbol

• Philipe (sp?) has started with some of this in his dissertation

• This might take a while to finish, like the "10 Years of SBOL Visual"

• This might be a motivator to companies who store biological data

• Could we request/suggest/require that IWBDA submissions or abstracts use SBOL Visual?

• Chris: We need to figure out how to fund curators
