HARDWARE ACCELERATOR

REFERENCE: ARM NEON SDOT

Here’s the simple version: SDOT lets you do a bunch of multiplications and additions in a single step. Imagine you have four pairs of numbers: text (1 × 2) + (3 × 4) + (5 × 6) + (7 × 8) Normally, your CPU would do each multiplication one by one, then add them all up. That's slow. SDOT does all four multiplications AND the final sum in ONE go.

Why does that matter? If you're doing things like: Multiplying huge grids of numbers (AI/machine learning) Processing images or video Audio effects ...then SDOT makes it roughly 4× faster than doing it the old way.

One catch (there's always a catch) SDOT only works on small numbers (8-bit). If you need bigger numbers, you have to use fancier instructions.

The "man on the street" summary SDOT = Do four multiplies and one big add all at once. Fast. Good for AI and graphics. Uses small numbers. Your phone probably has it.

HOW SDOT WORKS


The Short Answer

It uses special hardware circuits that are wired to do multiply + add in one step, not four separate steps.

Normal CPU: Does math one by one, like a cashier scanning items. SDOT/dp4a: Has 4 cashiers working in parallel and one manager adding their totals instantly.


The Detailed "How" (Still Simple)

1. Normal CPU does this:

Step 1: 1 × 2 = 2
Step 2: 3 × 4 = 12
Step 3: 5 × 6 = 30
Step 4: 7 × 8 = 56
Step 5: 2 + 12 = 14

That's 7 operations. Slow.

The Secret Sauce: The Adder Tree

The adder tree is the clever part. Instead of adding one at a time:

Level 1: Add result1 + result2 → temp1
         Add result3 + result4 → temp2

Level 2: Add temp1 + temp2 → final

That's only 3 addition steps instead of 3 sequential additions, and the chip can pipeline them so the whole thing finishes in one clock cycle.

The Physical Reality

Inside the chip, there's a block of transistors wired specifically for this pattern. When you write SDOT in assembly, the CPU just flips a switch that says "activate the dot product circuit" and feeds it the four pairs of numbers.

Why Can't You Do This With Bigger Numbers?

Because the circuit has fixed size. It has exactly:

  • 4 multiplier units
  • Each unit handles numbers up to 8 bits (for SDOT) or 4 bits (for older dp4a)

To do more, you'd need more multipliers → more transistors → more heat → bigger chip.
