Cropping of compressed image results in an increased file size in bytes

I'm having a strange issue when cropping an image.
In my app I take an image, compress it and then crop it with this library. The resulting file size of the image is greater than the original (compressed).
This sounds absurd to me, since the image is effectively cropped.

Is there a way to avoid this behavior?
