In the F9 -> Command menu, presumably after "Swap panels C-U", let's add a "Panel split M-,".

After decades of using mc, and rarely manually changing Options -> Layout -> Panel split: horizontal, I've just sort of accidentally found that it has a shortcut: Alt+,. (I tried far2l where it's Ctrl+, and is available in the F9 menu, and I gave it a try in mc, that's how I discovered it.)

Yes it's documented in the manual page, but who reads that? :-)

The exact wording yet to be discussed, maybe "Panel orientation", and also change it in the Layout dialog to the same? (In far2l the menu label is "Horizontal panels" or "Vertical panels", the opposite of the current one.)

Now that I'm aware of this shortcut, I think I'll use this feature more frequently. I wish I had discovered it earlier.

Curios trivia: I have discovered this shortcut a long time ago because in Russian keyboard layout it would be triggered instead of Find Files ;-)

As to the issue, we could add it; there are still (theoretically) two spots for 80x24 in the Command menu (see File menu, which is now completely full).

Only usually any such change starts a discussion about general menu re-organization for the file manager and then for the editor (see #4205), and sinks into the bottomless pit of options and opinions. So far nobody has gone as far as to propose a well-thought-through mockup which would satisfy all stakeholders and everybody could live with...

Well, it's more than full, the Exit option doesn't appear at 80x24, which has been bugging me forever :)

I don't have anything on my mind, but we certainly have more commands that are not accessible through the menu.

As a stop-gap solution and without provoking a huge discussion, maybe one could move the "Edit ..." things to the "Options" menu to free up space. Just an idea.

Maybe. Or -- if there's an intuitive way of grouping into more sections -- we could add another entry to the very top row, like Left File Command Action Options Right, or whatever.

Ah, that makes sense; I build without support for extended file system attributes on macOS.
