Fig 2-4 should be merged (or Fig 2-3 can be removed because they are contained already in Fig 4)

On the fence about this -- removing would be simple, but would require deeper restructuring of walkthrough. And if the paper is skimmed for images, having all of these wouldn't make sense.

But if the section is actually walked through, the series of images (I think) will be more helpful in succession if they're placed near where they are brought up in the text. If I kept them, then I would just polish up the walkthrough.

Yea, I think we agreed on the walk-through perspective, so I'm disinclined to change this unless you need space. One potential area for improvement is make it clear how the figure "fit together" -- that may not be obvious to the reader.
