<description><p>Es&rsquo;hail 2 is a communications satellite recently launched by the Qatar Satellite Company which carries an Amateur Radio transponder capable of both narrowband and wideband modes. This transponder was designed by both the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qatar_Amateur_Radio_Society">Qatar Amateur Radio Society</a> and <a href="https://amsat-dl.org/">AMSAT Deutschland</a>. Detailed information can be found on their <a href="https://amsat-dl.org/eshail-2-amsat-phase-4-a">project page</a>.</p></description>

<description><p>Direction Finding (DF) is an international competative sport where a team or individual has to locate a number of hidden transmitters using basic equipment, namely: a receiver, directional antenna and (usually) a map. Direction finding can be a small competition in an urban enviroment over 100&rsquo;s of meters or a large event covering 10&rsquo;s of miles over rough terrain in a national park!</p></description>

<p>The talk briefly covers the history of this fascinating mode of radio communication from WW2 to the present. It describes the physical factors that influence the signal path from earth to moon and back and how these are countered. Some typical amateur installations are illustrated together with an outline of measurements and tools to assess their performance.</p></description>

<p>Third year students in Cardiff University&rsquo;s Electronics Engineering program complete a course in which they design and build a project. This year two students chose to work on a 1.3 GHz beacon which the Cardiff University ARS hopes to install on campus. They&rsquo;ll give a report on the progress and learning experience.</p></description>

We use it with GNU Radio to demonstrate RF and communication signal concepts during our info sessions and to run demonstrations at public events. Within the group it is available to anyone interested in experimenting with Digital Signal Processing or UHF and Microwave systems.</p></description>

The short test (26 multiple choice questions) covers the basic skills and rules covering operating a radio system.</p></description>
